My Start as a Freelancer
My journey into the world of freelancing started when I was just 19 years old, after I got into a nasty fight with my boss (my father) that left me unemployed. I was jobless, clueless, had no support from my parents, with a wife and a newborn before I reached the legal drinking age. Not exactly off to a great start in this whole adulthood thing. As painful as it was at the time, it did force me to work my ass off though and learn everything I could about SEO, winning clients, and keeping them happy.
I picked up as many courses on SEO as I could and I read every single blog post on Moz.com about SEO. Shortly thereafter, I landed my first contract on oDesk (now UpWork) at the rate of a measily $15/hour optimizing a poems website. In my time as freelancer, I aggressively increased my rate as word-of-mouth grew and eventually found my self to be overworked and in desperate need of a vacation. At this point, I recognized that I needed to start building a team.
From Freelancer to Agency Owner
Through my agency, I had 12 full time freelancers writing content, designing graphics, and promoting content via outreach. I was making more money than I ever had made in my entire life up until that point, but it was stressful as hell. One of my clients who owned an eCommerce site made me an offer to work for him full time as their marketing director, so I closed down the agency and joined him. This is where I spent most of my day on the other side of things… hiring freelancers rather than wooing clients.
How I can Help You
I’ve made more than my share of my mistakes as I’ve navigated the worlds of freelancing, agency ownership, and entrepeneurship. I’ve shown insecurity on calls that’ve cost me high $ contracts, I’ve been ripped off by my employees, I’ve spent way too much time with soul-sucking clients, and I’ve let clients down. But I’ve learned a lot about how to scale a business and balance work life with professional life. On this site and through my email list, I will teach you how to take your freelance game to the next level. I’ll help you avoid the mistakes that 90% (including my self) of freelancers make, how to get clients that’ll pay you what your worth (usually more), and systemize your client acquisition process.
What’s more, I will teach you how to make your business fun again by landing the right clients that you enjoy working with. You know, those rare gems that are grateful for your hard work.
Using what I’ve learned, I have taught my closest friend how to 5x his freelance income. While I can’t guarantee these kinds of results for everybody, I can guarantee that you’re going to learn some incredibly valuable insights if you spend some time with me.
